To achieve greater demand for next-day and same-day deliveries, distribution centers (DCs) must achieve unprecedented throughput even as the materials handling industry struggles to retain employees in roles that involve highly repetitive tasks. Chief among these is picking the items needed for each consumer’s order so they can be packaged and shipped. Many DCs report turnover rates of 40% or more annually in manual picking-related roles that typically require workers to spend up to 70% of their time walking from one item to the next.
The third generation of Vanderlande’s ADAPTO overcomes these challenges. A roaming shuttle automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) with highly advanced sorting and sequencing capabilities, ADAPTO automates the picking of a wide array of products – serving as a force multiplier for staff members and enabling DCs to operate with far greater efficiency.
Unlike other shuttle systems, operators can be trained in a matter of minutes to process more orders with fewer mistakes. Because ADAPTO roams levels and aisles independently of lift platforms for true 1:1 picking, accuracy is ensured and orders are never accidentally combined. ADAPTO also handles the myriad of carton, tray and tote sizes used in most DCs.
ADAPTO’s much smaller footprint also increases the storage capacity of DCs, allowing them to stock more SKUs and increase the overall velocity of fulfillment operations. Notably, ADAPTO also seamlessly integrates with Vanderlande’s intelligent software, Goods-to-Picker workstations, and Robotics. Modular in design, DCs can also add additional shuttles and capacity with ease.
